New federal regulations slated to go into effect during 2014 will require vending machines to post product calorie counts and how they will be displayed.  The goal is to make vending machine customers more aware of calorie counts, and in turn, make healthier snack choices.

The new labeling requirements come as a result of estimates by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that if just two percent of obese adults ate 100 fewer calories per week, it would save at least $24 million in annual health care costs. The hope is that these new regulations will help achieve this goal by giving people the information they need to make better food choices.

What does this mean for healthy vending machine owners and distributors?

The FDA estimates that the cost to the vending machine industry will be $25.8 million initially and $24 million per year after that. For individual businesses, this is about $2,400 initially and $2,200 in annual costs.

While the final details on these regulations will be coming out in early 2014, we do know that these new rules will only apply to companies that operate more than 20 machines.

HealthyYOU™ Vending Distributors Have the Upper Hand

While other vending machine companies are scrambling to find ways to meet these regulations, HealthyYOU Vending distributors have already had this option for years.

HealthyYOU Vending machines have an easily customizable media console located on the front of the machine that can display calorie and nutrition information with no extra cost involved.

If vending machine distributors want to take it one step further, HealthyYOU Vending offers the option of purchasing a MediaLink™ Digital Display Package, a 7” digital LCD video screen that can display video loop or digital pictures from a CF card, USB or flash drive. This addition will give distributors the opportunity to show required nutritional information along with other eye-catching content to attract more purchases.

That’s just one way we help set up our distributors for long-term success in the healthy vending industry.  Learn more about our healthy vending machines and the advantages they offer by clicking here.
